Hilde Back Education Fund- Kenyan Based CBO supporting needy children

The Hilde Back Education Fund (HBEF) is a community-based Kenyan organization which educates talented children from poor Kenyan  families. The CBO has been on the limelight of late after the release of a documentary entitled A Small Act.  The CBO  sponsors secondary school education which is an expensive and challenging stage in the education of needy Kenyan children. Students apply for sponsorship after completion of primary school education and are considered on merit based on their performance in the secondary school entry-level exam – the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

The success story of sowing an educational seed is best demonstrated by Chris Mburu, a successful Kenyan lawyer working for the United Nations, who founded HBEF. Chris and many other children in his village were sponsored to school in the 1970s by a group of Swedish well-wishers who organized and participated in an international sponsorship program committed to educating Kenyan children from poor families. A Swedish woman, Hilde Back, participated in this program by planting an educational seed in the then 9-year old Chris who blossomed to become a lawyer and later joined Harvard Law School on a Fullbright scholarship where he attained a Master’s Degree in international human rights law. Today, Chris, a busy international human rights lawyer working in the United Nations chairs HBEF in his spare time and is one of the professionals that offer an inspiration to needy children in his home community in Githunguri Kenya.

Chris Mburu's and his education fund have been immortalised in the  documentary film entitled A Small Act which focuses on the work of HBEF.  A Small Act  has made a successful debut on the world stage, with popular appearances at key film festivals in America, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. It was recently aired on HBO in America and has been featured in major media outlets throughout the world. Some of the major film festivals that have screened the film include the Sundance Fim Festival, theEdinburg Film FestivalHot Docs Film FestivalLos Angeles Film Festival and many others.
