About the Finnish NGO Foundation for Human Rights- KIOS

The Finnish NGO Foundation for Human Rights KIOS is a consortium of eleven Finnish organisations working for human rights and development issues. KIOS was founded in 1998 to fund projects promoting human rights and development of democracy. KIOS is an independent, non-political, non-religious and non-governmental foundation.
Founding organisations are Amnesty International Finnish Section, Committee of 100 in Finland, Finn Church Aid, Finnish Disabled People’s International Development Association (FIDIDA), Finnish League for Human Rights, Finnish Peace Committee, Finnish Refugee Council, UN Association of Finland, Service Centre for Development Cooperation (KEPA), Finnish National Committee for UNICEF and The National Committee for UN Women in Finland.
KIOS promotes the realisation of human rights in developing countries as they are defined in the human rights treaties and instruments of the United Nations and the Council of Europe and in other correspondent regional human rights instruments.
Who Can Apply?
  • Local civil society organisations in KIOS focus countries.
  • Working groups and networks of civil society organisations working on human rights issues in KIOS focus countries.
  • In exceptional cases civil society organisations in exile may be supported, and only if their activities are targeted at a KIOS focus country.
Organisation may have only one ongoing project funded by KIOS at a time.

Organisations previously funded by KIOS can apply for new funding, but only after the previous project funded by KIOS has been completed. Each application will go through the same assessment process, whether applicant has received previous funding from KIOS or not.
 Geographically KIOS focuses its support primarily to

Who Can Not Apply?
KIOS does not provide funding for: 
  • Individuals
  • International non-governmental organisations 
  • For-profit entities 
  • Religious communities 
  • Political parties 
  • Governmental (whether national or local) bodies 
  • Exiled civil society organisations based in the Nordic countries
Funding Criteria
The funding criteria for the strategic period 2011 - 2015
 Type of projects funded
KIOS supports human rights projects of civil society organisations.
Typical projects funded by KIOS include:
  • Human rights campaigning, lobbying and advocacy
  • Human rights monitoring and documentation
  • Human rights awareness raising and education
  • Providing legal aid
  • Capacity building
Funding is not granted for development work, educational projects (unless human rights education), social work, humanitarian aid, research projects or socio-economic support for marginalized groups. Furthermore, KIOS does not grant scholarships, fellowships, or financial support for conferences or travelling.
How to Apply
Applications accepted continuously
KIOS holds an open invitation for applicants. Funding applications are accepted throughout the year. There is no deadline for application submissions.
Only one application per organisation will be considered at any one time.
The first KIOS grant can be for a one year (or shorter) project.

We register only complete applications, and kindly ask you not to send any concept papers.

Due to the large number of applications we can’t comment the possibility of having a favourable outcome on your application.
 Application Form and compulsory attachments
KIOS accepts only applications submitted on KIOS Application Form. The Application Form can be downloaded from here. The form can also be obtained from the KIOS office via email at kios@kios.fi.

Application must be signed by a competent authority of the applicant organisation.

Compulsory attachments to the application are:
  • Project Budget
  • Two Written References for the project
  • Applicant Organisation’s Annual Budget
  • Applicant Organisation’s Statutes or By-laws
  • Applicant Organisation’s Registration Certificate
  • Applicant Organisation’s Annual Report
  • Applicant Organisation’s Latest Audit Reports (from the two previous years)
  • For the two written references use KIOS reference form.

To speed up the process, you can also submit your application by email to kios@kios.fi, but make sure you also send signed hard copies of your application and attachments by mail to the address above.
