The call for proposal falls under EIDHR is Objective 2 which is: Strengthening the role of civil society in promoting human rights and democratic reform, in facilitating the peaceful conciliation of group interests and consolidating political participation and representation.
The specific objectives (s) of the Call for Proposals are:
- Strengthen civil society efforts to bring about legislative changes and to improve state policy on fundamental human rights issues.
- Enhancing Political Representation and Participation
- Enhancing the inclusiveness and pluralism of the civil society.
Grant amount: The minimum amount that applicants can apply for is EUR 50,000 while the maximum amount is EUR 150, 000
Eligibility
The Country Based Support Scheme (CBSS) for Sudan focuses on in-country civil society organisations (CSOs) which may wish to cooperate with regional, European-based or other organisations and national public-sector institutions (including National Human Rights Institutions).
Organizations eligible must fall under the following criteria:
• Civil society organizations (including NGOs and CBOs)
• Third level academic institutions
• Independent political foundations (NOT political parties)
• National Human Rights Commissions and Parliamentary bodies
• Private sector non-profit agencies

Title: Strengthening capacities in the cultural sector
Deadline 19 November 2010
Theme: Cultural cooperating under “investing in people” and the eastern partnership culture programme
Objective of the call for proposal is to contribute to the creation of a political, regulatory, institutional and economic environment conducive to the strengthening of the cultural sectors and their actors as a vector for sustainable economic, social and human development
Applicants can choose to apply for any of the two lots provided.
§ Specific Objectives that needs to be included in the proposals include strengthen capacities of public, semi-public and private actors involved in the governance and structuring of the cultural sectors, regarding the role and representativeness of professionals, entrepreneurs, artists and civil society organizations;
§ support participation of civil society in processes enhancing cultural governance at local, national, regional and interregional levels, promoting inclusive cultural policies in respect of cultural diversity and fostering access to culture for all;
§ Contribute to creating adequate conditions for the development of cultural activities and cooperation in the context of regional integration and international networking.

About VLIR-OUS
VLIR-UOS funds and facilitates academic cooperation and exchange between higher education institutions in Flanders (Belgium ) and those in developing countries, which aims at building capacity, knowledge and experience for a sustainable development. As part of the Flemish Interuniversity Council, VLIR-UOS is responsible for managing and dispersing the university development cooperation funds of Belgium ’s Minister of Development Cooperation.
Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students.
The International Training programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).
The target group for master programmes comprises students from developing countries.
Every programme has specific admission requirements, however, relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired skills and knowledge in the student’s country are considered.

$6.6m US Health Grants to fund teen pregnancy prevention in Sacramento
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has granted $ 155 million to states, districts, nonprofit organizations, institutions like schools and universities out of which the Office of Family Planning, a division of the Department of Public Health, is receiving the largest chunk of the $14.2 million in grants allocated to California while a state family planning division based in Sacramento has been granted $6.6 million in federal funding for its personal responsibility education.
The funds will be used to expand and replicate effective teen pregnancy prevention programs and innovate approached of reducing teenage pregnancies. In California , teen pregnancies have generally been declining, dropping 26 percent since 1991, when teen births were at their highest since 1960. In 2008, 51,704 babies were born to 15- to 19-year-olds, down 3 percent from the prior year, according to live birth statistics from the state Department of Public Health.

Nomination Guidelines
Eligible voluntary organisations, institutions and individuals worldwide, with knowledge or interest in environment and/or sustainable development are welcome to nominate candidates for the Sophie Prize.
Candidate's nominated by them selves or by their staff or by honorary officers will not be taken into consideration.
Annual deadline for nomination is November 1st.
WHO CAN BE NOMINATED
The Sophie Prize will be awarded to an individual or an organisation that in a pioneering or a particularly creative way, has pointed to alternatives to the present development and/or put such alternatives into practice.
- What kind of change of consciousness is needed?
- What is sustainable wisdom?
- What qualities of life are the most important?
- What important alternative measures must be implemented now?
- What kind of mobilisation of people is needed in the “global village”?
The recipient of The Sophie Prize will have sought a challenging answer to one or several of the questions above and thus contributed to setting them on the international agenda. Concerning fair distribution of resources and global environment and development issues, we will distinguish between what is (seen to be) possible to achieve in the short run and what is truly necessary in the long run. The Sophie Prize will honour efforts to promote changes in the world that are necessary in a long-term perspective.
