The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) is designed to support small projects proposed and implemented by local organizations in various countries. In providing funding for small projects that offer direct social, economic, or technical assistance to local populations, the CFLI contributes to the overall goal of reducing poverty.

1.   Zambia  (2011-2012)
Maximum CIDA Contribution:   $ 137,500
Executing Agency:           High Commission of Canada to Zambia
Description
CIDA’s programming in Zambia is closely aligned with Zambia’s poverty reduction strategy for 2006-2010, The Fifth National Development Plan, which aims to reduce poverty and improve access to basic services.
The goal of CIDA’s program in Zambia is to help the country secure a future for children and youth by improving health systems and maternal and child health.

2.   Kenya (2011-2012)
Maximum CIDA Contribution:   $ 100,000
Executing agency:      High Commission of Canada to Kenya
Description:
CIDA’s programming in Kenya is closely aligned with Kenya’s new long-term national planning strategy, officially known as Kenya Vision 2030.
The goal of CIDA’s program is to help Kenya secure a future for children and youth by improving primary education and strengthen democratic governance by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the public sector.

3.   Jordan (2010-2011)

Maximum CIDA Contribution:   $ 162,500
Executing Agency:           Embassy of Canada to Jordan and Iraq
Description:
CIDA’s programming in Jordan is closely aligned with Jordan’s priorities of economic development, public sector reform and modernization of the education system, as outlined in Jordan’s National Agenda.
The goal of CIDA’s program in Jordan is to secure a future for children and youth and stimulate sustainable economic growth. CIDA is helping Jordan to increase education and employment opportunities for a young and rapidly growing population and to improve competitiveness in the private sector in order to reduce poverty and create employment.

4.   Egypt (2010-2011)
Maximum CIDA Contribution:   $ 205,500
Executing Agency:           Embassy of Canada to Egypt
Description
CIDA’s programming in Egypt is closely aligned with the country’s economic plan, The Sixth Five-Year Plan 2007-2012, which seeks to create employment through market reforms, stimulating investment and promoting private sector participation in the economy.
The goal of CIDA’s program in Egypt is to help the country generate economic growth by strengthening the enabling environment for small and medium-sized enterprises and providing skills for employment to marginalized people.

5.   Algeria  (2010-2011)
Maximum CIDA Contribution:   $ 100,000
Executing Agency:  Embassy of Canada to Algeria
Description:
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has a bilateral program in Algeria that focuses on two sectors: development of the private sector through vocational training, and support for civil society. It subscribes to the priorities defined by Algeria and directly targets the development of local capabilities.

6.   Angola  (2011-2012)
Maximum CIDA Contribution for 2011-12 is $ 167,500
Executing Agency: Embassy of Canada to Zimbabwe, Angola and Botswana
Description:
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) does not maintain a significant assistance program in Angola and there are no long term projects planned in this country.
Issues:
Angola benefits from various programs. Examples of such programs are:
- geographic and multilateral programs including:
- the Pan-Africa Regional Program and
- the International Humanitarian Assistance Program;
- other programs that allow institutions, associations, Canadian and international non-governmental organizations and, private sector enterprises to receive funding from CIDA to execute projects worldwide.

7.   Albania (2011-2012
Executing Agency: Embassy of Canada to Italy
The current CFLI proposes to contribute $50,000 in the year 2011-2012
CIDA’s 2008-2009 disbursements for projects and initiatives in Albania: $370,000.

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) does not maintain a significant assistance program in Albania.

8.   Argentina (2011-2012)
Executing Agency: Embassy of Canada to Argentina and Paraguay
The current CFLI proposes to contribute $120, 000 in the year 2011-2012
CIDA’s 2008-2009 disbursements for projects and initiatives in Argentina: $3.97 million.
Since 1997, Canada’s development cooperation in Argentina has focused on transferring Canadian expertise and methodologies to contribute to Argentina’s:
- ability to deliver programming, particularly in the areas of health and education; and
- efforts in public sector reform.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) maintains a limited assistance program in Argentina and there will be no new long-term projects planned by Canada in this country. However, Argentina can benefit from various programs, such as:
- geographic programs including the Inter-American Program;
- multilateral programs including the International Humanitarian Assistance program;
- other programs that allow institutions, associations, Canadian and international non-governmental organizations, and private sector enterprises to receive funding from CIDA to execute projects worldwide.

9.   Nigeria(2010-2011)
Maximum CIDA Contribution:      $ 400,000
Executing Agency:                   High Commission of Canada to Nigeria
CIDA draws on the priorities identified in Nigeria’s National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS), along with the President of Nigeria’s Seven Point Agenda, Vision 20: 2020and state-level strategies, to guide its programming in Nigeria. The goal of CIDA’s program in Nigeria is to help the country achieve equitable and sustainable poverty reduction by improving the country’s ability to use its own resources for development. CIDA will focus on securing a future for children and youth, and stimulating sustainable economic growth in two states: Cross River and Bauchi.
